Dachau: A grim anniversay

75 years ago today Germany established Dachau as a camp for political prisoners. Eventually it was not just political prisoners who were held and died there.

The majority of camps were liberated on a Sunday. It's my impression that liberating camps was not considered an urgent matter by the Allies. Dachau is the only camp I know, in which the liberators were allowed to dish out to the guards some of their own medicine, it's estimated that 170 were lined up against a wall and shot by US troops, and another 120+ were killed by prisoners seeking revenge. The interrogation of a small number of Dachau guards can be seen on TV, the History Channel programme on "The SS". These important newsreel documentaries seem to be ignored when we speak about the camps and what occurred there.
