Giving Ann Coulter her due.. with a song and a smile

Many of you, I am sure, were appalled by Ann Coulter's performance on Donny Deutsch's show. She was flippant about Judaism, Deutsch's religious commitment, and her hair... Actually she just flipped her hair around as is her wont.

It's one thing to hear this argument [that Christians are perfected Jews], known in theological circles as supersessionism [Christianity has superseded Judaism] or replacement theology, from theologians. In fact, many Christian theologians no longer make it because they see what it lead to: pogroms, Crusades, and, ultimately, the Holocaust.

But to hear it from this political commentator, a woman who loves to beat up on underdogs and spews contempt as she does so [remember her faggot episode?], was a bit too much.

She may even have realized she went overboard because she asked Deutsch to give her a moment to explain herself after the first segment. If you look closely you will almost see her sweat.

When Deutsch asked: "Should we throw Judaism away?" She said: "Yes."

Now a group called Barely Political has taken her on in song.

They prove that humor is the best medicine and the best weapon and they wield both very very well.

Bravi, Bravi, Bravi.

I was actually more disturbed by Schlussell's comments (also see here for clarification), but thankfully she doesn't wield the same megaphone that Coulter does.

Thanks for the reference - what a fabulous take-off on Coulter!

While a lot of Christian theologians, and so many clergy and lay Christians who think hard about the relationship between Christianity and Judaism now reject replacement theology, supercessionism was the mainstream teaching for many many centuries (see James Carroll's Constantine's Sword for a just such a history from a Christian perspective) and it dies hard-- so it should hardly be surprising that there are clergy who still preach it and congregants that still believe it.

I agree 100%. For this reason I repudiated Christianity and became a Noachide.

"(see James Carroll's Constantine's Sword for a just such a history from a Christian perspective)"

Having read this particular book, I can say here that I think it is disgusting, tediously verbose, and nothing but a shameless DENIAL of Christianity's complicity in not only precipitating the Holocaust but also its complicity in spawning the Christian anti-Jewish shibboleths that made the Holocaust possible.

"there are clergy who still preach it and congregants that still believe it."

James Carroll "preaches" this in his book. You must have missed it somehow. Rather than honestly "confess" to Christianity's sins against the Jewish people, Carrol actually attempts to exculpate the religion of Christianity by way of sophisms and cavil. I actually challenged Carroll in a rebuttal to an article he wrote in a newspaper not long ago, not only about the subject of his letter, but also about his book Constantine's Sword and its romantic disregard of the anti-Jewish hatred with which Christianity has infected so much of mankind, both latent and overt. He never answered my emails.

It astounds me that anyone would recommend this book as an historical summation of Christian anti-Jewish hatred when in fact it is an attempted exculpation of the religion of Christianity from the anti-Jewish hatred it created and the Holocaust it precipitated.

"Old sins cast long shadows."

Though Carroll is unquestionably a Catholic writer-- he is quite uncompromising in presenting the Church's role in fostering, justifying, and promoting anti-Semitic tyranny and he has no reluctance to name names.

It seems to me that your difference with Carroll, Hocky Hound is not historical, but theological. You have determined that your spiritual life, in light of your opposition to Christian antisemitism is to become Noachide. Carroll's opposition to Christian antisemitism has instead led him to call for radical reform of the Catholic church.

I, for one, respect your right to disagree with one another.

You've missed it altogether. Carroll blames the "Church" as a means of exculpating the religion of Christianity proper. The "Church" is yet another ugly manifestation of Christianity proper.

Carroll writes at the end of his book, "The Church is how God's promise to Israel is available to me..." Does that sound like replacement theology to you? Can you believe that in the same paragraph he promises that the Church does not "supercede" or "surpass" Israel?!

My disagreement with Carroll has nothing to do with theology and everything to do with his interpretation of Christianity's dark history.

"Theology" in the Christian context is another word for "conjecture".

"You have determined that your spiritual life, in light of your opposition to Christian antisemitism is to become Noachide."

I became a Noachide because the Torah declares that the Jews are the only people qualified to teach me about the existence of G-D. I opposed anti-Jewish hatred long before I became a Noachide and immediately after I repudiated Christianity.

"spiritual life"

What is a "spiritual life"?

Hockey Hound,

It is rather clear to me that when James Carroll uses the phrase "The Church"(as when most Catholics of my acquaintance use the phrase) he means both the institution of the Catholic hierarchy and the Catholic faith-- and his call to reform "the Church" in light of the history anti-Semitic tyranny comprises both institutional, and theological reforms. I don't see his work as advocating a replacement theology-- it has other weaknesses, but that is not one of them.

It is your right to decide that Carroll does not go far enough-- but nothing is gained by making him a strawman.

You should know, I haven't the slightest interest in making James Carroll a "strawman." Actually, I am quite unfamiliar with this term ["strawman"] as I purposely forfend the use of trite statements and rote phrases. People who default into this academically taught type of mud-slinging usually do so as a means of fending off the temptation of using cavil to bear out a threatened argument. It is by such didactic methods that tedious minds like James Carroll's dreamed up the blatently unctuous term "anti-Zionist," as though the anti-Zionist is the non-Jewish world's avenging answer to what a loyalty-bound Catholic Carroll would surely regard as the Israel-obsessed observant Jew.

You've misunderstood me: I did not intend making Carroll a strawman nor accusing him of not going far enough. Rather it was my intention to expose him for the sophist and the sycophantic liar that he is. James Carroll is the perfect example of the proverb, "Old sins cast long shadows."

As I pointed out in my last post, you've missed it. I am talking here of veridical Christianity, not the implausible and cloud-covered Christianity imagined by imprudent and verbose fools like Paul of Tarsus and James Carroll. It's like George Bernard Shaw once said: "Christianity might be a good thing if anyone ever tried it."

Christianity precipitated the Holocaust. That's all you need to know. If James Carroll wants to call it "Aunt Betty with a bun in her hair," fine and dandy, but all his equivocation and numinous apologetics will never remove the blood-stain of six million Jews from the "theology" of Christianity's New Testament. Which is to say, without Jew-hatred, which is the essence of all "replacement theology," there can be no Christianity. Ditto Islam.

For ratings- more people will watch or go looking on-line to see the crazy speak. But since I don't care about ratings I share the same question.

Those of us with a marketing background might say in the after-light of the Holocaust, that maybe Judaism should be 'rebranded'? Lets be frank the 'market perception of Jews' as not exactly been a success and I seem to recall a recent opinion poll in the USA in which 40% of those polled said "They did not want a Jew, or a Jewish family living next door to them." The reasons are immaterial, thats what these people said and thats what they meant. I know it sounds corny but how about Jews using the name Israelites, or Sons of David, or The Mount Olive Church on Shabbos Group. Quite frankly I'm getting heartily fed up of listening to people speak about Jews and Zionists, and mentioning some secret scroll that says they want to rule the world - starting presumably with Hester Street, NY. [Not exactly the best start if you ask me] You can tell these speakers and writers have never ever met a Jewish person, or dined with a Jewish family, or studied Russian and East European poverty 1850 - 1950 in depth, and for me thats what being Jewish has been for at least a 1000 years. Not great wealth, nor great wordly success, but grinding down-at-heel Jewish poverty taking place in ghettos [ a walled city for the poorest of the poor] Jews buy thrift clothing, Jews scrimp and save, whilst keeping up the pretence of being a member of an elite financial clique, who just happen to be good at money-making [ha-ha] and great business leaders. [Give me a break] Sorry folks, its not true, just listen to Jackie Mason speak, its true what he says, many Jews cannot mend a fuse, cannot fix a car or put a vacuum cleaner together, and horor of horrors they cannot find £1000 or an $1000.00 dollars, and dare I sat it they do not read BOOKS, and, this is the majority of Jews, maybe Jews represent mankind 'behind closed curtains.' Glad to get that of my chest.

I've read some of Jackie Mason, and I must say he is not very complimentary or hopeful about Jewish existence. Remember, Jackie Mason, as much as I admire him, does not live in the world wherein live most of the Jews he speaks for.

I'm quiet certain that every Jewish friend I have can certainly mend a fuse, fix a car or put a vacuum cleaner together. I have no idea what you are talking about when you deny them these simple human capabilities.

Are you Jewish? Oh, yeah, you're a convert, right? Perhaps you can mend a fuse and fix a car and put a vacuum together simply because you were not born Jewish and in your case these capabilities are congenital, is that it?

I'm sure you're trying to be helpful, but you're not being helpful-not when you say things like this.

Anti-Semites hate Jews simply because they're Jewish, because of their Judaism, not even because of Zionism. It's that simple. Changing their names or moving all of Israel to Madagascar will never change this malevolent reality.

Lastly, Jews don't live in closets. Why should they? For what reason?

Hockey Hound Quotes: [a] Perhaps you can mend a fuse and fix a car and put a vacuum together simply because you were not born Jewish and in your case these capabilities are congenital, is that it?

Hockey, there's a generation gap between us, and there's a huge generation gap between 1930 - 1975 Jews, and their off-spring. In 1960 I was amazed at how timid my future-in-laws-were. They lived in a non-Jewish street, they were mindful of the fact that they had to blend in and they did this by being respectful and humble to one and all. I was different, I was in their [my in laws] eyes a "trouble maker", why, because I told the local bully I would not move my car out of his way, and if he wanted a fight, then I'd kick the XYZ s--t out of him. You see this is a typical Brits attitude to life, but, and please remember this 'Its not your average UK Jewish person, or Jewish familys reaction to lifes little trials'. And in these few sentences you have I hope an insight into the UNCHECKED growth of anti-semitismn worldwide. Rest assured I know more about Jews and Jewish history than you do. Another thing, USA Jews are different to European Jews, your 4th and 5th USA generations down from the 1880 arrivals know nothing of their g'parents trials and respectful attitudes to others. And, Yes, their grandparents could not mend cars, fix fuses, and were all the more loveable for that reason.I'm presuming your a USA citizen, [soto voice- another rebel from the colonys] Walk tall.
